The City of Oakland won a $15 million judgment against an organization that allegedly charged thousands of dollars for deficient legal services. Oakland City Attorney Barbara Parker called the organization a “morally bankrupt enterprise.” The San Francisco Chronicle reports that American Legal Services defrauded immigrants by claiming its consultants were attorneys. These consultants allegedly promised to obtain lawful status for the scammed immigrants who paid thousands of dollars. Instead of helping the individuals obtain lawful immigration status, some individuals ended up deported and stuck outside the US.
